EDUCATION & TRAINING INFORMATION

You may discover, during the course of your career search, that you need a certain kind of training or education for the type of job/career that you desire. Or, you may have other goals such as getting your GED or learning a new language that require further study. Let us help direct you to some solutions:

ADULT EDUCATION

Adult Education means different things. For many–it means an opportunity to create a solid foundation of skills and knowledge for the beginning of their own personal goals. These goals may be becoming a more aware and knowledgeable person, getting a new job, learning a new language, obtaining a GED, getting into college or a training school, and/or increasing your self-esteem. Adult Education can be a starting point for all of these!

JOB TRAINING FACILITIES

Information on technical schools and training facilities is coming soon. We’ll have information on beauty schools, truck driving academies, computer network certification schools, and many others.

COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES

College catalogues are a a valuable resource. The catalogues will tell you what programs and degrees are offered at which schools.

We also have many college applications and detailed program information. Also available is Peterson’s Guide to Four-Year Colleges and Peterson’s Guide to Two-Year Colleges. These are informational guides on colleges which contain contact information.

Access the computer program, “Texas Cares” online. “Texas Cares” is a computer program that includes information on many educational programs in Texas. For example, by using “Texas Cares” you can learn which colleges offer nursing programs. Sorry – we are no longer linking to the “Texas Cares” program because it loads very slowly and is unusable.

PAYING FOR TRAINING OR EDUCATION

SCHOLARSHIPS: Contact the financial aid or the counseling/advising office at the school you are planning to attend and ask about scholarships that are available for the school and for particular majors. You can also do searches on the Internet to find information on scholarships, or look at sources such as the Worldwide Graduate Scholarship Directory. Be sure to check with your employer and organizations in your community about scholarships or tuition reimbursement programs.

TUITION EXEMPTION: You may be exempt from all or part of your tuition if you meet special qualifications. To learn more, check with the school of your choice or the Texas Coordinating Board of Higher Education. For some of these exemptions, you must demonstrate financial need and are required to fill out the Federal Financial Aid form. Among those who may qualify are blind and deaf students, foster care students, a graduating senior whose parent is receiving TANF, highest-ranking high school graduate, children of disabled firefighters and peace officers, firefighters enrolled in Fire Science courses, ROTC/National Guard students, senior citizens who are at least 65 years old, children of prisoners-of-war or those who are missing in action, and an educational assistant who has been working in this capacity for at least two years.

PELL GRANTS & FEDERAL FINANCIAL AID: Federal Financial Aid includes Pell Grants, work/study, and low-interest loans. Because Pell Grants are an entitlement, you will receive the money if you qualify. Many trade schools accept Pell Grants. There are some important things to remember when applying for financial aid – (1) You must apply early in order to get the money in time for school. Please refer to your school for their financial aid deadlines. (2) You must apply for admission to a school before they will consider your financial aid application. If you are unsure about where you want to go to school, use our site to research educational programs (this info will be available soon).

Employers: Do you know about Texas New Hire Reporting?

Federal and State law requires employers to report new hires within 20 days of their state date. Information received is kept in a confidential database and used by various state and federal agencies to ensure payment of child support and prevent fraud in Workers’ Compensation, unemployment claims and welfare programs. This can help reduce the costs of these programs and LOWER YOUR TAXES. To find out more about it, and file your report on-line, go to the following website:

Here you’ll find the information you need to begin opening the doors to your dreams!

JOB LISTING

There are times when you “need a job right now” and getting one yesterday was too late. Although we can’t guarantee you a job, we do have access and information on many employers and their available openings.

JOB SEARCH ASSISTANCE

Register on one of the many online job-search websites – they are your entry into a vast network of employers in the Rural Capital and surrounding area. The internet is a great way to track down job leads (and there’s a wealth of information on this site). However, don’t forget about the two most obvious was to learn about potential job openings:

NETWORKING

The most effective method to find a job is by word of mouth. Every person you know – your friends, neighbors, former employers and coworkers, even your mailman – can be a job source. People are generally more than happy to help you find work if they know you are looking for work. Read on to learn more about effective networking techniques.

NEWSPAPERS

Check the classified section of your Sunday newspaper. Although only 15% of jobs are advertised this way, it is still important to look at the want ads. If you live anywhere near the capital area of Texas, look through copies of the Austin American-Statesman, which contains the Sunday classifieds.

RESUME ASSISTANCE

A resume is your “advertisement” – not your life story. Many employers expect you to have a resume. A good resume will help “sell” your specific skills, abilities and accomplishments. It provides information that will let an employer know how you are a good match for the job. Remember, the main purpose of a resume is to get a job interview.

TIPS ON WRITING EFFECTIVE RESUMES

Use the “need to know” principle. What does the employer need to know about you in order to want to interview you?

Resumes don’t get people jobs – they help to get interviews.

Length should be no longer than two pages. If you use a second page, fill it completely. If you can’t, make it one page.

Tailor the resume to fit you. There is no right or wrong, except for the following: DO NOT use pronouns (“I” or “My”). DO NOT list birthday, marital status, height, weight, references, etc.

Give the employer a reliable way to contact you. Home phone, work phone (if appropriate), message phone (if there is no answering machine and you’re not at home much). E-mail.

Listing an Objective on the resume is optional – some employers like it, some don’t care. However, listing an objective can strengthen a resume, if it is compatible with the job you’re applying for. Having your resume on a computer disk can make it an easy task to change your objective. Never send a resume with an objective that doesn’t match the job that you are applying for. Save the employer time and tell them what you can do – don’t just list a work history and make them figure it out. This is best done using a section highlighting/summarizing skills and accomplishments, e.g. “Summary of Skills & Experience”.

Always list job history with present or most recent job first and work backward from there. Be as descriptive as possible about the work you’ve done – help the employer picture you at work. Quantify accomplishments when possible.

If education or licenses are an important requirement of the job, list them near the top. If not, list high school graduation, GED attainment, college work or degree at the bottom. It is not necessary to list the years of attendance or address of the institution. If you are a graduate of the program, list: Graduate, Springfield Jr. College.

ALWAYS have at least one other person proofread your resume!

INTERVIEW COUNSELING

Have you ever said or thought, “Interviewing is one of the hardest parts of the job search”? IT DOESN’T HAVE TO BE THAT WAY! The interview is your chance to show an employer that your skills and experience would be a great asset and that they should hire you! It’s normal to be nervous before and about the interview, however, there are ways to prepare for and manage your anxiety. To help you prepare for your job interview, consider these questions in advance:

What do I wear?

What kinds of questions will the interviewer ask me?

How should I respond to tough personal questions?

What kinds of questions should I ask the employer?

Are there some questions that are illegal for an employer to ask?

Are there any rules or hints that would benefit me?

LABOUR MARKET INFORMATION

Understanding what is happening in the labor market can be an important factor in helping to determine what type of job or career that you want to pursue. Various types of national, state and local labor market data are available through this and other websites. Some of these include:

COVER LETTER ASSISTANCE

A cover letter will typically accompanying each resume you send out. The cover letter can determine whether or not the employer even bothers to read your resume, so it’s worth the time to write an effective cover letter.

Cover letters are an introduction which should complement (not duplicate) your resume. Thus, its purpose is to add a personal touch and also mention how your skills are relevant to the specific job you’re applying for. Remember that the cover letter is usually your first written contact with an employer, so create a good first impression!

Ideally your cover letter should be tailored specifically to each potential employer. Employers can usually recognize when they’ve received a generic “copy & paste” cover letter that has likely been sent to many other employers. Effective cover letters mention reasons for your interest in the specific organization, as well as why your specific skills or experiences would be valuable in the position you’re applying for.

Try to look at your resume from the employer’s perspective if you can. Employers will be thinking “how will this person’s skills & experience be valuable to me?” Try to answer that question in your cover letter.

And one last thing: avoid platitudes! A platitude is a trite or obvious remark that really any applicant could use and ads no real value. For example, don’t write something generic and vague such as “I’m a hard worker.” Any potential employee can say that, and it is essentially meaningless to an employer. Instead, you might mention specific circumstances where you went above and beyond the call of duty to accomplish something in your previous jobs.

CHILDCARE INFORMATION

Child Care Management Services (CCMS) helps parents who are striving to become self-sufficient by giving them more choices in child care arrangements and by helping them find qualified caregivers. If you meet certain income guidelines, CCMS can reimburse some or all of your child care costs. Read more childcare information here…

JOB FAIRS

Attending a job fair can be one of the most productive activities for a job seeker. It’s one of the few times that you will have several businesses and other employers gathered together in one spot just to talk to you about a job! They are also a great place to figure out what’s happening in the economy – what companies are growing and what positions are in the most demand in your local area at that time. You don’t have to understand a labor market survey to comprehend just who is hiring when they are sitting right in front of you!

Here we discuss what CCMS is, how to qualify, how to find child care providers near you, and provide guidelines on selecting quality child care.

CHILD CARE MANAGEMENT SERVICES – CCMS

In some areas of Texas there is a CCMS program in place which can:

Offer families an identifiable source of child care information and financial assistance

Assist providers in increasing and maintaining quality childcare

Support and strengthen the child care industry

HOW TO FIND CCMS CHILD CARE PROVIDERS NEAR YOU

To find out which child care providers in your area accept children whose parent’s are subsidized through the CCMS program, run a search on this page, and make sure you check the box labelled “Accepts Child-Care Subsidies” (see image below).

DO YOU QUALIFY FOR CCMS ASSISTANCE?

GENERAL CHILDCARE INFORMATION

“A child needs the highest quality care and attention, for they are vulnerable and highly affected by their caregivers.”

Child care deserves to be a top priority for responsible parents. It is a frightening experience to for a parent to discover that they had entrusted so much of the care for their children to a wrong person. The future of a child depends largely on the experience and the people who mold his/her first five years of development.

Working parents must see to it that the child care providers have the perspective of a mother in terms of protection and development of the child.

Here are some ways to evaluate your potential or current child care provider:

1. Evaluate The Physical Environment

The surroundings where your child will be spending his/her day should be healthy, vibrant, safe and full of pleasant colorful shapes enabling your child to learn. Colors can affect the mood of your child, colors red, orange and yellow stimulates and increases brain activity. The colors green, blue and violet induce relaxation. Children especially those with attention disorders can fully benefit from any brain stimulating colors. Make sure these are present in the provider’s area for your child.

The place should first and foremost be safe for curious and receptive children and it must conform to the ages of the child being cared for. Shelves should be arranged so that climbing is not possible. Lower areas must not contain small objects that are within reach of two year olds (such as crayons, clay or small things). Other devices such as plugs, medicines, sprays, and bottles should be far from the reach of any child. Toys should be arranged in an orderly manner where it is easy for children to play with.

The child care location should also have a regular schedule for disinfection and cleaning, including of course the whole place, ensuring that the children are kept away from insects that might bring in viruses and infections.

2. Observe the Child Care Provider

If there is a need to evaluate the place, most likely parents need to measure up the provider, who deals directly with the child. Child rearing is not an easy task, and requires a competent provider. A provider must know how to deal with the child 0-5 years old. There are provisions of the state which address the ratio between providers and children. In Texas, the following are recommended:

The maximum ratio of providers to babies is from 1:2; infants 1:3; toddlers 1:5; pre-school age 1:10

Any provider must obtain a certificate from the state for any government regulation, there are recognized centers which aids eligible providers for employment at the same time gives parents assurance of their child’s welfare.

The US Department of Justice has created the American Disabilities Act that outlines guidelines for caring for children with disabilities.

Providers, on a stricter definition, need to be quality role models. They will serve as the second parents and that from them values and morals are absorbed by the children they had met for over eight hours a day, which in turn shapes up the major holistic development of a child. Nonetheless, a provider must be careful of his/her verbal language and even gestures which obviously being studied and even mimicked by children. Even any stories and experiences they impart to the child can have a significant impact.

Providers could be crossed examined at the end of the day by parents. How can this be done? Through your child’s answers to questions such as: How was your day? Are you happy? Do you want to play and learn again the next day? If all of these questions receive an affirmative answer then the provider must have made a good connection or bond to your child.

Before enrolling your child to a center, if possible agencies must be background checked for their specifications and requirements on their list of their employees serving as eligible providers.

3. Observe Your Child’s Behavior Before & After

There is no other familiar person who can best evaluate a child but his/her parents, especially their mothers. Likely, parents can determine if their child is ready for child care outside the home or not. It is important to prevent any mild trauma the could be created if a child’s ability to tolerate stress, adjustment and total change has been violated. Therefore, parents must carefully observe their children to determine whether they are ready for day care providers or any institutions for child tending. If children are ready, then observation of their behavior AFTER child care should begin. Any changes like unpleasant manners, gross verbal languages or any deterioration on good manners and right conduct could be taken into consideration. Physically parents must examine their children for any bruises, unusual scratches or bandages at the end of the day to find out if they are in a safe and sound environment. Interview your children if he/she has learned more everyday and if there are new things he/she might have observed and experienced.

THE BEST CHILD CARE

The best child care is however that provided by a full-time mother who gives a 100% unfailing attention to her offspring. Modernity brings us to a reality that parents, including mothers need to be away from home, thus leaving the children to other than parent’s care. So who can be the best child care provider aside from parents? Luckily there are often a few options:

Parents-in-law or biological grandparents of the children

The biological father, an aunt or an elder sister who can be trusted in any respect

Selected and proven child care providers recognized by the state (often CCMS)

In respect to men, without any issues on gender sensitivity, basically mothers have the highest tendency to make the greatest sacrifices for the welfare of their children. This is due in part to the fact that the unborn child has been with her for over nine months and that the child continuously felt the unconditional love, unfading patience and care. Men by nature, except for a few, do not have the faculties to tend and nurture a child how a mother does hence, we normally observed women to be great child care providers for infants and growing toddlers. Grandparents have been shown to have a high desire to take care of their children’s children and usually bring the best effort they can, for they have done it before, often have a strong desire to ensure that their grandchildren healthy, happy and learning.

How To Get Financial Assistance For Child Care?

We understand that quality child care is expensive. Next to housing, child care is the largest expense in most families’ budgets. The main source for long term assistance with child care cost is Child Care Management Services. The state government can often help finance any parents who might approach them for assistance. The Texas government has put forth significant effort and funding to ensure the welfare of children, including Child Care Management Services (CCMS). There are numerous sites dedicated to research on child care and policies, where the state strongly fights the rights of a child and that any orphans or those without any guardians are taken under custody and protection of the state through its Department of Social Works in its government assisted child care centers.

Unemployed?

Ideally, you probably want a job. For help with finding a job, visit our job seekers page. Of course there are some situations where it’s simply not possible to find a job within a reasonable timeframe, so you need to make an unemployment claim to collect unemployment benefits.

To qualify, there are three main factors involved:

Past Wages: The amount of benefits that you can collect is determined by the number of hours in the past 12 months as well as the wages you received during that time.

Separation From Your Last Work: Basically, you must be unemployed (or be working reduced hours) through no fault of your own. For example, you maybe have needed to leave your job for documented health reasons or you may have been laid off simply because your employer no longer had enough work for you.

Availability & Job-Finding Efforts: You must also be available for work, and be actively searching every week for work. You also must be registered with the appropriate government organization.

For additional information, you may like to consult the Texas Unemployment Compensation Act or visit the link at the bottom of this page.
